This week we spoke to Andrew Askey, Product Manager — Cards and Wearables, at MuchBetter, to understand their early days, their COVID-19 survival tips and what they see as the future of fintech.

When was MuchBetter set up, and who was involved from the beginning?

MuchBetter was created in 2017 by a team of collaborative innovators with a wealth of experience in payments, who imagined a more rewarding and easier way to manage your money, transfer and use online and offline. Israel Rosenthal our CEO and co-founder, and many of the management team were there from the very beginning.

What are the things you are most proud of in your company’s journey?

There are many things we at MuchBetter are proud of. But to list a few:

The people. I have only been with MuchBetter for 3 months but it is already obvious MuchBetter is where it is today thanks to the hard working and enthusiastic team that have been put into place and continues to grow.

We created the world’s first dynamic CVV code! Unlike most other bank cards in the world, the MuchBetter debit card doesn’t have this number on the back. We store this secret 3-digit number in your MuchBetter app, and it changes every time you use it, which makes it impossible for somebody to use your stolen card details online.

Our unique range of wearables including our key fob and our partnership with Winwatch who provide a Swiss watch with smart payment functionality infused into sapphire glass.

COVID-19 has been inescapable in 2020. Can you share any survival tips for businesses?

Adaptability has been one of the keys to business survival. This is always the case but never more so than in 2020 where plans have had to be more flexible than ever.

Also — and this is a survival tip for both business and outside of business — is that people are important: look after them make sure they are OK and have everything they need. When you join MuchBetter you are welcomed into the “MuchBetter family” who are just like a family should be providing support; providing security and a sense of belonging; open communication; making each person within the family feel important, valued, respected and esteemed. I have no doubt this has helped them as a business and their employees through these difficult times.

What do you see as the future of fintech?

The future of fintech is innovation. Before the events of 2020 customers were already looking for new and exciting ways to manage and make payments. This has only been escalated by the events of the last year. 2021 could be a very exciting year for fintech who could be a big part of the economic recovery from effects COVID-19.
